Chris Washburn
The third overall pick in the 1986 Draft — taken one selection after Len Bias — the Chris Washburn was an athletically gifted 6’11 center with rare speed and soft hands for a player his size. The Golden State Warriors took him early in that draft despite numerous questions about his work ethic, conditioning, and dedication to playing basketball. Unfortunately, most of those concerns proved to be more than valid. Less than one year after being drafted, he checked into a rehabilitation clinic, admitting to having a substance problem. By 1989, after failing three drug tests in three years, Washburn received a lifetime NBA ban almost exactly three years after being drafted. After his playing days were done, Washburn moved to Houston, where he was destitute and says he lived in abandoned buildings and crack houses and ate out of garbage containers. Thankfully, he has since kicked his addiction, and helps others who struggle with substance abuse problems. Washburn tried his luck in the restaurant business, but had to close down his wing spot within the first year of operations.
