Roy Tarpley
Another top ten selection in the infamous 1986 NBA Draft, the Dallas Mavericks selected center Roy Tarpley with the seventh overall pick. Things seemed great early on, after he made the NBA All-Rookie Team in his first season and won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award the following year. But, six games into the 1989–90 season, he was arrested for driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest, and suspended by the NBA. Just a few months later, he was suspended again after after being arrested for DWI again. Just a few months after that, he picked up his third alcohol-related infraction and was banned from the league for violating the NBA’s drug-use policies. Sadly, even after a brief comeback with Dallas in 1994, he received a permanent ban from the league for, once again, using alcohol (and violating the terms of a court-imposed personal aftercare program).
