In 2010, after his last season at Auburn University, Cam Newton won almost every award a college quarterback can win: the Maxwell Award, the Walter Camp Award, the Davey O’Brien Award, the Manning Award, AP College Football Player of the Year, and of course, the Heisman Trophy. But, he’s far from a beloved figure for those SEC fans outside of central Alabama. He was at one point suspended by the NCAA after they found out his father, Cecil Newton, solicited a cash payment from Mississippi State University as part of Cam’s recruitment. The suspension was later lifted after the NCAA could not materially prove Cecil Newton might have done the same thing with Auburn, but rumors continue to swirl that some type of payment was provided to the Newton family in order to get Cam to play there.
