5. Todd Marinovich (USC)
Even amidst whispers of drinking, hard-partying, and recreational marijuana habits, Todd Marinovich was one of the most highly coveted prospects coming out of high school in the late 1980’s. Eventually, he chose USC, largely on the basis of his family’s connections to the school. While he did show flashes of brilliance during his time there, between the intense pressure of living up to his press clippings coming out of high school, his clashes with head coach Larry Smith, and his substance abuse habits off the field, he never really lived up to his potential at USC. A month after the 1990 season (his last at USC), Marinovich was arrested for cocaine possession, and also admitted to having marijuana on him at the time.
