4. Jeff Hostetler
Jeff Hostetler spent most of his first five years in the NFL as a backup to Phil Simms and and longtime journeyman Jeff Rutledge. The only time he ever got any actual playing time was as the field goal placeholder. At one point, he got so desperate for the chance to play that he actually asked the coaches if he could play on Special Teams, and even briefly considered retiring. But during the 1990 season, Hostetler took over for the injured Simms in Week 14. He performed capably, helping them win two of those last three games, and then did just enough to help guide the Giants to Super Bowl XXV.
It was more of the same in said Super Bowl, where he “managed” the Giants offense, completing 20 of 32 passes for 222 yards with one touchdown pass, allowing Super Bowl MVP O.J. Anderson and the Giants defense to help upset the heavily-favored Buffalo Bills.
